Shah placed second in Purebred Geldings 2 & Under
3rd Place: 1 year old Futurity

From this time to the end of August of 2000, Shah's training included:

*Halter broke to stand tied; lead at walk and trot.
*Lunge line; Walk, trot, canter, whoa in both directions, first with a halter, then under saddle.
(Western saddle, and eggbutt snaffle bit)
*Shah  has been taught to load in a horse trailer, and been taken for rides. The longest he has
been on so far is to Albany, Oregon, for the show above. This is two and a half hours one way.
*Shah has been taught to stand still for the clippers on all parts of his body.
*He has been ponied off of both Tuffy and Koda.
*By  the end of the summer (2000) Max and I had both mounted him, Max from both sides.
Ashley had  the honors of being his first rider when she was led around our riding arena on him by
     Max.

January 10, 2001:     Lunged with saddle and bridle.  Max mounted him several times from both sides. Spent about 15 minutes with different riders being lead around on him. Shah was very relaxed with the whole process, and never offered any resistance.
January 15, 2001: Shah's first official ride with Max on board. After warming him up on the lunge line, Max mounted and rode him while I walked along side of them. It was abit funny to watch, but since Shah knows and understands the verbal cues, he soon figured out what Max was asking for. About 10 minutes was spent walking in a straight line, and stopping, then walking again. A few turns were asked for in both directions. Lots of rewards with praise was used to reinforce our lesson.

February 2001: Shah with Max up.

August 2001: Shah cools off in the river with Max and Brice

October 2001: Sheriff's Posse Hazzard Clinic: A bit blurry, Shah negotiated all obstacles

Shah obeys the command "WHOA"
And lunging wonderfully

More pictures to follow as Shah proceeds through training...

September 17, 2002: We have progressed!  Shah is being lunged with a rider on his back at walk and TROT! The first time Shah was cued to trot with Max on, he popped right into it with no resistance. He trots well both directions, we were surprised at how well balanced and steady he was right off the bat. Last week I worked him in the arena with two other horses. We stayed at the walk, and played "followed the leader."  When the other horses progressed  to trot and canter, he stayed calm and obeyed my cues to continue at the walk. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to be on his back.  The view from his back is WONDERFUL --- beautiful brown tippy ears with a black etching.

June 2003: Shah continues to progress. He has now been out on the trail. He is not afraid to be in the lead. The first time we asked him to cross a creek, he walked willing through it each time he was asked. All that swimming in the river has come in handy! Below is Shah following Tuffy across Beneke Creek, located in the Jewell Elk Refuge on a Mother's Day ride, June 11, 2003.

May 28, 2003:This was taken above our farm. Max and Shah admiring the view spread below them of the Nehalem Valley.

We are looking forward to an awesome summer on his back.
